History and landscape painting address the outside world, portraits dwell on the individual, still-life pictures focus attention on objects studied from close-by. But interiors disclose the intimate, personal small slice of the world which men and women create for themselves.
Furnishings, belongings, and choice of colour scheme reflect life styles. In an interior everything included is of equal importance and conveys occupation, mood, taste. Whether the people that inhabit the room are present or not, interiors mirror their personality. Figures never dominate, they are integrated, merged into the enclosed world which is theirs. Interiors therefore have a lyrical, poetic quality, and the viewer often feels privileged to be admitted.
