Oceanic Art

Oceanic art — or the art of the South Seas — embraces the art and artefacts of all the inhabitants of the Pacific. The numerous islands include some inhabited by Indonesian people, such as the Dayaks in Borneo, and the region is divided into three cultural groupings
This vast area was populated over several millennia by the migration of people from southern Asia, a spread which developed largely undisturbed by external influences until the late 19th century. Although the islanders drew upon a common source, strengthened by inter-island contact, distinct cultures evolved with individual cultural styles. See preview
