Travel as a subject has inspired painters. The excitements of journeys offer them visual possibilities, and departures and arrivals are often full of emotion.
Travel as a way of life has appealed to many artists, because before the age of photography they had the role of bringing back to their compatriots the reality of far away places.
Painters have always sought to travel in search of climates with different light and colours. The Mediterranean has had strong appeal for northern artists. The vividness of works done there often contrasts with those of a stay-at-home such as Thomas Gainsborough.
